Watchem Smokey moves to Old Friends at Cabin Creek
Watchem Smokey is now a permanent resident at Old Friends at Cabin Creek: the Bobby Frankel Division, in Greenfield Center, NY. While we were sad to see Smokey leave Oklahoma, as a former Frankel trained racing warrior, he is a fitting tribute to the great Bobby Frankel. We couldn't be more thrilled that his retirement will be filled with greetings and treats from admirers and visitors in NY. Special thanks go to Dawn Mellen, of After the Finish Line, who provided financial help in getting Smokey to NY, and Michael Blowen, of Old Friends for generously accepting Smokey into Old Friends. Smokey has a one of a kind personality and is already hamming it up for visitors in NY. The OTRP feels honored to have been able to save Smokey, and privileged to have been a part of his bright future.

Former Oklahoma Champion Returns Home
Earlier this year, the OTRP welcomed the return of Picaso, a stakes winning 2005 Oklahoma bred gelding by Alphabet Soup, out of Breakthrough, by Prosper Fager. Picaso had dropped through the claiming ranks, ending his career in a $4k claimer at Penn National in Pennsylvania. With the help of Marlene Murray of R.A.C.E. Fund, Inc.,and financial support from After the Finish Line, the OTRP was able to bring Picaso back home. Picaso is a past Oklahoma bred champion with earnings of $115,211 and was the Two Year Old Champion Colt at Remington Park in 2007. Currently, Picaso is enjoying some rest and relaxation in a small herd of other OTRP racing warriors at Circle E Ranch in Stroud, OK. The OTRP wishes to thank Marlene Murray, Dawn Mellen, and Picaso's trainer/owner who graciously donated Picaso to the OTRP. Picaso's future looks very promising as he soon will be available for adoption.

OTRP and Tulsa Boy's Home Form Partnership What an exciting and powerful combination – Thoroughbred racehorses and teenage boys! Through the Tulsa Boys’ Home’s new partnership with the Oklahoma Thoroughbred Retirement Program, Oklahoma retired Thoroughbred racehorses continue to work their magic creating incredible breakthroughs helping troubled young boys find healing and hope for a bright future they never thought possible.
Boys at the Tulsa Boys’ Home interact with horses in a variety of activities. The horses are an integral part of helping boys with behavioral issues, attention deficit disorder, drug addiction, abuse issues, and depression. The Tulsa Boys’ Home equine program helps the boys improve their skills in the areas of communication, conflict resolution, teamwork, and building positive, healthy relationships.
Lucky Repete and Suleiman, who will continue to be owned by the OTRP, are the first of several OTRP horses to participate in this teamwork effort of healing. What outstanding second careers for these former racehorses!
Perhaps you….maybe a group of your friends or co-workers….would consider sponsoring one of these special horses….just $5.00 a day pays the “salary” for one of these horses to work his magic. Help a horse help a child!

Multiple Stakes Winning Highland Ice Now With OTRP
Highland Ice was in need of place to spend his retirement, so the OTRP stepped up and took the Oklahoma-bred star into their care. The multiple stakes winner and earner of $474,090, Highland Ice raced for owner Gerald Dixon of Guymon, Oklahoma at tracks throughout the south and midwest including Remington, Oaklawn and Lone Star Park. The son of Highland Blade and the Icecapade mare Ice Magic was trained by Chuck Turco.
Best known for his dominance of the sprint division at Remington Park in Oklahoma City, Highland Ice won the 1995 Oklahoma Classics Juvenile and then prevailed in the next four runnings of the Classics Sprint. In '97 and '98 he won consecutive editions of both the Silver Bullet Centennial Handicap and the Remington Sprint Championship. The gelding also ran in the money in nine other added money events. In 1999 Highland Ice set the Remington track record for five furlongs-:57.20.
"Highland Ice is one of state's winningest Thoroughbreds, so we're happy and proud to have him with us" said OTRP's Robin Brookins.
Highland Ice is currently residing at OTRP's satellite farm near Stroud, Oklahoma. We'll soon have some pics of Highland Ice at his new home - stay tuned!
